Bowling Etiquette

Sunday, August 2nd, 2009

Bowling has always been one of Jackie’s favourite activity, and because the house balls are always drilled with holes much bigger than my fingers or the holes drilled too far apart such that they make my fingers cramp after a while, since last year December, I decided to have my own customised ball.

My bowling technique has always been poor such that my score multiplied by 2 still loses to Jackie. Somehow, the ball will end up cleaning the ‘drain’.

Today, we had a bad bowling experience in Hougang Superbowl. We had 3 different groups of bowlers on the lane on our left but all of them had the same bad habit. A few times we had our throws interrupted: we were already getting ready to throw our balls, but they seem to ignore this point and went ahead to throw their balls.

The 2nd group of people from China (I decided to edit this word from PRCs as it doesn’t sound nice) were the limit. I ended up moving a few steps ready to throw my ball only to find myself having to stop the momentum as they had went ahead of me to throw their balls.

Therefore, I decided to post this bowling etiquette which I’ve found on the Internet:

1 ) DO yield the ‘right of way’ When two bowlers are on adjacent lanes, and simultaneously ready to bowl, the bowler on the right delivers first. The other bowler ought to remain off or to the rear of the approach area. This rule doesn’t apply if the bowler on the left is shooting for a spare.

2 ) DON’T take a practice swing with your bowling ball on the concourse or behind the approach. Wait until you are upon the approach itself before doing any practice exercises.

3 ) DO be ready when it’s your turn to bowl. Remain in your lane area while your teammates are bowling, don’t wander off.

4 ) DON’T use an excessive amount of body gyrations at the foul line after delivering the ball. Confine your body ‘English’ to your own lane.

5 ) DO bowl immediately when it is your turn. Once you have your ball, assume your stance and start your delivery, it isn’t necessary to wait for lanes on either side of you to be cleared before you bowl, just observe the ‘right of way’ rule.

6 ) DON’T bring food or drink into the settee or bowlers area, a drop of liquid or any type of foreign substance spilled on the approach could cause a slip and serious injury.

7 ) DO wait until you have completed the frame before checking your score. Don’t come back to the scorekeeper after the first ball has been rolled.

8 ) DON’T bench jockey while others are bowling. Friendly bantering is an accepted part of the sport, but don’t overdo it. Be a good competitor.

9 ) DO return your bowling shoes to the counter control desk after bowling, and if you’ve borrowed a ‘house ball’ return it to the storage rack.

10 ) DON’T linger at the foul line after releasing the ball. As soon as your ball hits the pins return to your seat.

Hong Kong & Macau Trip 2009-Day 4

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

On the 4th day of our Hong Kong trip we went to this restuarant @ Prudential Hotel for Dim Sum Breakfast (I honestly forgot the name of the restaurant but the dim sum is really good!)

My parents & I then went to Mongkok to buy the famous Wing Wah Wife Biscuits. Dad then bought another goose drumstick (his excuse: he won’t get to eat this back in Singapore). We then went to the ferry terminal to join Chae Siong and wife to take the ferry back to Macau.

I think we had too much good food in Hong Kong; we actually find food in Macau quite disappointing.

Later in the evening we went to to the casino in Venetian Macau.

Hong Kong & Macau Trip 2009 – Day 3

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

We went to Ocean Park on the 3rd day of our trip. It was a wise choice as that was the only day that did not rain throughout our trip. Dad said we were really lucky.

Dad was amazed by this Asia’s longest (or is it world’s longest) escalator.

I never had the courage to take this roller coaster, not to mention no one is accompanying me to take trill rides this time round!!!

I like this picture of my dad. This is one of his best pictures taken in our trip.

Dad’s tense face when we were on the ferris wheel.

The pandas’ cave has been renovated since my last trip. There’s even a raccoon section!!!

We later went to the peak. Pardon my poor night shots as I have shaky hands.

Rinko & his ball…

Saturday, July 25th, 2009

Rinko loves his blue ball from Ikea so much that we bought 4 of the same balls for him. One of them was destroyed by Kookie so he has 3 of them left. Let’s see what trick he can play with his ball.

Hong Kong & Macau Trip 2009 – Day 2

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

On the 2nd day of our trip, we went to 大屿山 and Disneyland.

There was a little bit of fog so the Buddha background became a bit blur in mum’s picture.

We have meant to take the cable car to the Great Buddha but dad has a little phobia of heights, so we decided to take the bus up and take the cable car down later, giving him the time to mentally prepare himself. However, it started to rain very heavily so we aborted the idea and took bus 23 back to Tsing Yi Station.

For those who love shopping for good buys, please note that Citygate Shopping Centre beside Tsing Yi MTR is occupied by factory outlets of international brand names like Nike, Addidas, Club21, Levi’s, Espirit etc whose prices are 30-70% cheaper than what you find in the actual boutiques though the designs may be one season older.

When we reached Disneyland, it was still drizzling. Nevertheless, we still managed to have fun on the rides and watch the fireworks.

The day ended with my favourite dessert shop in Hong Kong, 许留山.

Hong Kong & Macau Trip

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

I went to Hong Kong & Macau with my parents, Chae Siong & wife last month. Jackie has decided not to join us at the last minute so I had to share a room with my parents. We took the plane to Macau and transferred to Hong Kong via ferry on the 1st Day. I had seasick on the one hour ferry trip. By the time we reached Prudential Hotel in Kowloon, it’s already late evening and all of us were famished.

Dinner was roasted rice near Temple Street. We had roasted goose drumsticks, roasted pigeon, roasted pork, char siew and vegetables. Look at how oily the goose drumsticks are!!!

Carrot cake…

Friday, July 17th, 2009

What can we do with 2 carrots & 4 eggs? Well we can bake carrot cakes!! One for my colleagues and one will be for Jackie and my neighbours.

I like baking carrot cakes because they are so expensive at cafes and the cost of making them is so so cheap… However, the process of grating the carrots does kill me. With Rinko and Kookie waiting by the kitchen counter for carrots (yes, they love raw carrots), it doesn’t help with anything either.

Next time we shall try baking other types of cakes. For those who might be interested in the recipe, you may find it here.

Birthday Celebrations Part 2….

Sunday, July 12th, 2009

Posting of this part 2 shall include celebration on actual day itself.  I went to the zoo!!!

The last time I went to the zoo was 2 years ago before they renovated it into Safari theme. One reward for going to the zoo is being able to see the zoo’s latest addition,a baby pygmy hippo which was born on 4th June 2009. This little guy has not mastered the skill of trapping water yet and kept jumping up to the water surface for air while following his mother in the water.

During one of the animal shows, we also managed to see a white peacock with his feathers spread out.

A zebra crossing that looks like zebra stripes:

On a side note, Jackie made a birthday cake for him by himself as my birthday gift.

Birthday Celebration Part 1…

Friday, July 10th, 2009

I finally managed to upload all my birthday celebration photos. I know this post is 9 days late. I somehow had issue uploading my pictures to my flickr account earlier.

The 1st birthday cake I had was on my birthday eve. A colleague of mine has her birthday one day after mine so we blew the candle together. The strawberry chocolate cake from secret recipe is sooo rich and delicious, too bad I did not manage to take a picture of the interior.

I am not posting pictures of my colleagues here to protect my company’s as well as my colleagues’ interest.

When hurt is done to outsiders…

Friday, June 19th, 2009

I need to apologise to person involved cos the other person has totally misunderstood my meaning. I should have predicted this action of his because he’s always been the 冲动 type.

I sincerely offer my apologises. Sorry for the hurt caused.

In Tribute To Bibi…

Wednesday, April 15th, 2009

Bibi has passed away yesterday. I woke up to see her motionless in her cage. I bought Bibi 10 years ago from Pet Safari, Simei with Dawn and she was my second rabbit after Ah Bai, my 1st rabbit.

When my dad was hospitalized, Bibi has refused to eat nor drink. She was also one of the smartest rabbits I have ever seen. I remembered once her favourite brand of rabbit pellets was out of stock island-wide. We have tried to mix other brands of pallets for her but she managed to pick her favourite pellets out of the mixture and left the other brand intact in her food bowl.

She was also the 1st rabbit to make me realise that rabbits do grunt and is not afriad to fight Wonka when he tries to chase after her.

Some pictures of Bibi in the past:

On the same evening when Bibi passed away, a huge moth was discovered in my bathroom which makes me wonder if she’s came back for a final farewell.

In Memories…

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

Jackie’s godfather who is also his maternal uncle has just passed away on 17th Feb 2009. Jackie was informed his godfather was admitted into ICU on Monday and had rushed over on the very afternoon by coach to visit his godfather. By Tuesday morning, the doctor has instructed his cousin and him to inform everyone to take their last look at him. I was informed of his death at 0900+hours.

I took the 3.30pm coach to KL after leaving Rinko and Kookie in my mother’s care (Little Rinko boy suffered from a 1.5day diarrhoea after returning from my mum’s place. He probably had consumed some tibits that he never had before. Rinko has always had a weak tummy).

I have only met Jackie’s godfather once during one of his cousins’ wedding and the 2nd time I get to see him is actually at his funeral. He has actually planned to visit us in Singapore somewhere this year. It’s a pity that I did not get to interact more with him. Sometimes, we tend to occupy ourselves with our own activities so much that we tend to forget to spend more time with people around us. It’s only when events happen, whether for good or bad that we remember them. I should really treasure time with my love ones whenever I can.

The next trip to KL will be a happy event. One of Jackie’s cousins will be getting married on Mothers’ Day.

Should I or Should I Not?

Monday, December 15th, 2008

I have been thinking if I should take up BSc / BSc (Honours) Mathematics with Psychology @ SIM for the next July intake but financial is a worry. Hopefully I can find sponsors or strike lottery sufficient to cover the course. Till then…

Lee Guitars All Stars Concert….

Monday, December 1st, 2008

I went to the Lee Guitars All Stars Concert at Singapore Indoor Stadium yesterday. I would say this is one unique concert as the name suggests, the bulk of the performance involved guitars. Even the stage is a big big guitar!!!

The concert started with 李宗盛 singing the theme song for the concert followed by a few songs he has written, then with Emil Chou (周华健)who managed to make the uncle sitting beside me to sing and clap along with him.

The guy in shades in 张震岳. The trio were singing 《我是一只小小鸟》.

The concert continued with Tanya Chua & 陈绮贞 and a guitar pro playing 《离开地球表面》 solely on his guitar. Many were amazed by him.

The whole concert ended with 五月天’s performance with 李宗盛 rounding up. I found it a pity that 阿信 did not sing 《私奔到月球》with 陈绮贞 as I felt that would make a very good guitar duet and this is one of the few times they get to perform together on the same stage.

Guitar Hero World Tour & Rock Band

Friday, November 28th, 2008

I am hooked on GHWT & RB2 on my PS3 recently. GHWT’s drums were not compatible with RB initially but Harmonix has since updated their patch to allow the use of the drums which means I can now play RB2 with my GHWT set.

GHWT’s drums is quieter than RB’s (I haven’t got to try RB2’s drum set though, so I can only compare RB1’s with GHWT’s). I need to buy another guitar to maximise the number of players to 4 so that we can have one vocalist, bass, guitarist & drummer.

Monopoly Session

Friday, October 31st, 2008

I had Ah Boy and Gavin over at my place on Deepavali’s eve. We’ve intended to play Wii and Mahjong but QJ couldn’t make it so mahjong was put off.

After Wii and PS3 (we wanted xbox360 as well but the poor set encountered the red realm of death again so we let it go), we started our long Monopoly session which took a whole 6 hours when I became the 1st one to go bankrupt.

The session ended at 5am, so we took Kookie and Rinko to McDonalds’ @ Rivervale Plaza before Gavin and Ah boy took their buses home.

My dears, please remember to reserve a day for Guitar Hero Wolrd Tour when it arrives at my place in mid November. Hope this time round QJ can join us and we can get to play the mahjong session which we had intended since months ago…..

Exploring around…

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

Bibi had a fun time exploring round the house today. She had Rinko and Kookie chasing after her when she hopped from the balcony to the living room.

Jackie found her on the sofa when he left the entertainment room for bed.

Her pictures with Rinko reminds me of a particular picture she took with Wonka when he was 3 months old. Doesn’t he and Rinko look alike?

Game Convention Asia 2008

Monday, September 22nd, 2008

I went to collect my passport on Friday (finally!) and dropped by at Suntec City Convention Hall to visit Game Convention Asia.

I managed to see the hardware for Guitar Hero World Tour and found the drums and guitar particulary cool.

I also managed to see some professional players on Rock Band. When I say ‘professional’, these guys play the guitar and the drum on expert mode. I can only manage the easy mode on the drums so far.

As I have forgotten to bring my camera, please make do with my Sony Ericsson W910i’s 2MP camera.

There was a Rock Band competition at 4pm that day but I did not stay long enough to watch it.

I caught a glimp of Rayman Raving Rabbits TV Party at the convention too. The same retarded looking rabbits are back but this time, the game make use of the Wii Fit board. Those of you who bought Wii Fit and thought your Wii Fit board is going to be an white elephant after you get bored of the game, you do not have to worry anymore as after Wii Ski, Rayman Raving Rabbits is the next game that makes use of the hardware. I believe there will be more games that involve the Wii Fit board in future too.

Does he have nothing better to do?

Playstation 3

Sunday, August 24th, 2008

I’m recently hooked on Playstation 3’s Dynasty Warriors 6. Gerrard said with this addition, I have ALL consoles in my house. Indeed, with xbox360, PS2, Wii, DS Lite, PSP, I couldn’t think of any more consoles which I do not own. :P

Jackie on the other hand is hooked onto the console’s Hot Shot Golf. I think for golfing games, I’d still prefer Wii as its motion is more real-life simulated.

Little Prince is asleep on my bed now. He really treats my bed as his nowadays. I wonder if his fur can grow back in time for his birthday.
